What's the best training program for speed skaters?

Beware of the coach who tells you he or she has the "best" training program!

The fact is, there are a number of great coaches and training plans out there. My personal opinion is that you will perform best under a training and nutritional plan that you embrace where you are motivated to give 100%. Sure, there are many other factors that help a skater succeed such as team dynamics, coaching techniques, team cohesiveness, strategies, etc. but having a plan to follow is perhaps the most important component besides your level of commitment to that plan.

This particular plan is different than most... this plan will absolutely produce positive results when 100% effort is applied. Here are some of the integral parts of the training program:

  • - There are no repeats. You will not perform the same exercises today that you did yesterday. The program changes every day so that your body never gets used to a particular motion, exercise, etc. Your muscles are always being challenged. When your muscles are challenged they are growing and getting stronger.

  • - It's progressive. One week builds on the previous week. As the season progresses the exercises switch from overall toning to sport-specific concentration of a particular body part. You will work on exercises and drills that help your endurance, speed, etc...

  • - It's focused... focused on applying the appropriate training disciplines ( strength, endurance, speed, power, etc...) at the appropriate times of the speed skating season at the appropriate intensity levels and allowing for appropriate rest, recovery and nutritional needs..

- You'll receive proven training techniques that allow you to maximize your performance... Circuit training, complex training, sport-specific training, crash training, super sets, grass drills, plyo work, progression principles, etc...

- With this program you'll record and measure everything. Writing everything down allows you to review what works so that you can make changes  when necessary. Measuring everything keeps you informed of how you are progressing. Your daily training journal will become a great training resource for you.

It's unlike anything you have done before. When I follow the program I always give 110%. I describe the program as nauseating and brutal at times because I always try my hardest. I like to push my body to the limits with every exercise, every drill, every day. That's one of the key components of this program... maximum effort every time.

This program calls for intelligent eating habits, disciplined training and absolute execution. Plan to sweat a lot. Plan to hurt a lot. You've never, ever gotten results like you can get with this program.

Coach Steve

If you are beginning any new exercise program such as this one, you are advised to first consult your physician. Any advice I render should not supersede the advice you would receive from a trained health care professional should you choose to consult one.
